“He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”” ~Matthew 13:33
When yeast is added to flour, it causes the dough to rise. It changes the nature of the dough. Without the yeast, the dough doesn’t change. Similarly, without God, neither do we. Just as the yeast permeates the dough, God desires to permeate our souls so we can experience the abundant life on earth, which Jesus died so we might have. However, before God’s kingdom can manifest around us, it must first be born within us.
God desires to have an all-access pass to every area of our hearts. Basically, God wants ALL of us. “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” (Mark 12:30) He knows we cannot undergo Christ-like spiritual transformation without Him. Absent the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, many changes we attempt to make (even those that are well-intended) eventually go off track. Why? Because God said apart from Him we can do nothing. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.’ (John 15:5) Yet, we go about trying to change our lives solely based on our understanding and our plans. And, because we’ve (knowingly or unknowingly) excluded God, many of these changes are usually superficial and short-lived.
To experience heaven on earth, God must permeate our lives like the yeast permeates the dough. So, how do we allow God to permeate our lives? Through daily surrender. We surrender when we pray. We surrender when we worship. We surrender when we intentionally make time to read and study His Word (with the help of the Holy Spirit). We surrender when we become doers of His Word. In essence, God permeates our hearts and minds when we willingly submit to His will and His ways. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” (James 4:10) Overtime, through different seasons of our lives, His Spirit works through and through us until He touches every broken, dysfunctional and painful place. As God’s Holy Spirit gradually saturates our being , we heal, grow and mature spiritually. Our lives begin to manifest the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When our lives bear God’s fruit, we will experience heaven, the abundant life, right here on earth. “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” (John 10:10) God wants us to have a fullfilling life right now, and we will as we allow Him to have His way with our souls.
Prayer: Father, you are perfect and righteous. I praise and magnify you in my life. No part of my soul is off limits to you. May your Holy Spirit saturate my soul until every broken, hurt and scarred place within me is healed and made whole. I pray that the fruits of your Spirit flourish within my life. Lead me and guide me in the way I should go. I trust you with my life. Holy Spirit, have you way. I ask these things in the name of your beloved son, Jesus. Amen.
